your pics of the baths are fantastic. I live just around the corner and have never been inside the place but always wondered what it was like. You have done a sterling job of preserving the character and present ambience of the deserted buildings. The dereliction of the place is captured so well it almost makes the ruins justifiable. It is a shame to lose a building that was created with such craftsmanship and that reflects the style of its time. Id love to see as many aspects of the building as possible preserved whilst breathing new life and a purpose into the building. Id be interested to hear if you have any thoughts regarding the potential future fate of the baths. Again, cool pictures. Cheers mate, john

I've often wondered if there are any ghost watches that might be taking place there and would love to join one if there was, please could you let me know if you have any information.

Hi there, What a great site you have, I came via a newsy link named Topix. I am very interested in Blackburn Royal Imfirmary. I spent 3/4 of my childhood there, its creepy to say the least roaming the old wards lol even virtually. I have to say I was heartbroken when it had to close and I don't see why the money spent on the new place could'nt have been spent on BRI. Did you ever come across the convalescent ward which used to be the nurses home, I spent weeks in there after reciving the last sacrament. I would love an image of that to buy. Looking at the asylum album thank the lord they all got shut down. A lot of people got shoved in places like that when they were lets say, 'troublesome'. As for putting Epileptics away how shocking is that? Many thanks SS Kate

Looking at these clips brought back so many memories. I trained at BRI as a nurse and worked there and Queens park when I qualified. I trained in 1975 and finished in 1996 after becomming pregnant with my 4th child. It is sad to see the place looking like this. Queens park is now gone and there are no old photo's as memories, thankfully I have found these and will keep them safe. Thankyou.

Hi, love the Deco theater! It's my favorite era & the one I collect. I named my Antiques business 'JazzBabies Vintage' after the naughty flapper girls that bobbed their hair, sipped cocktails, smoked, & danced to Jazz music. What are the theater's owners going to do with the remaining fixtures? That's a fabulous hand-rail; it would sure look nice on my stairs... I hope they have the sense to preserve features like this railing & the lovely curved wall of glass blocks. I enjoyed it; thanks. - Archaic

Cane Hill Psychiatric Hospital I'm in India, been here for several years. We have problems with the Internet due to some cable being snagged in Alexandria by a large ship. I've spent three hours trying to look at your photos of the above this morning...because I had to... I worked at Cane Hill from 1973 til 1975 as an OCcupational Therapist Aide (My boss was Miss Watson) and met my late husband there too, who came to work in the same department. I worked with Barry Vines and Pauline Chua (Entertainments Officers) and spent about 16 hours a day there most days. Viewing your photos has taken me back to a place and time that completely changed my life - and I'm not sure, when I saw the photos, whether I felt happy or moved. I think moved, or touched deeply, is a better expression to try explaining to you what you have done for me. I knew Cane Hill had closed and felt touched back then - but seeing these photos and knowing almost every room/area of them...as I spent so much time there talking with patients, organising dance's with patients from Bethlem and Netherne amongst other Hospitals, for the patients in our hospital, and walking the long dark corridors with a young woman of 18 years, trying to get her to stop wanting to kill herself. Being called in the middle of the night because one of my patients had been found dead (suicide they said, but we know otherwise) He was only 19 years old. How I used to love the walk up the drive every morning and the clubhouse for a drink after work, then the long slow walk back down again to the bus stop. The mists that hung over the fields on the drive and the most beautiful stallions that knew you so well and used to come galoping over to meet you when you began the meander from the front gate. Many memories have jumped back into my heart this morning. You have brought back a multitude of memories and kind of reminded me where all the work I have done in the past 30 years started from. In fact, from when I became an adult in the true sense of the word and found out that there was a lot more to this world than I had learned util then. I am truly touched this morning, even disturbed a little. My husband died very young also at 35 yrs old, back in 1986 - and I've been travelling since - though settled here in India since 2000 after finding a small phocomelia boy, whom I am hoping with all my heart to bring back to either the UK or France later this year. Thank you friend, you have become a part of my life, in that you have shown me again where my vocation began - I hope I can buy these photos so that I may take a good long look at them one day. God bless you. Maureen

Only very very recently got into this whole idea of UE, never been out and done any, don\'t know of many places and don\'t really know anybody interested. Your birch hill report inspired me a bit more, i live less 10 minutes from the place and have been in it a good number of times when it was live, actually had the pleasure (or not) of staying a night a few years back. Are you local to birch hill or have you just hear dabout it and travelled to it? How much of the site did you get to see? its a fairly big site, not sure how much of it (if any) has gone though, i know they are planning to build yet more houses on it.

Heya, I didn't mean to post a comment about any photo in particular (because they're all excellent), but here I am anyway! God, you've made a great job out of the site. I find it fascinating how eerie, old buildings are just left to descend into a derelict state. It's weirdly captivating to see how everything is left untouched as though the places were fully functioning the day before (when you brush aside the dereliction!). I just stumbled on to your site because I was reading up a bit on St Kevin's former Lunatic Asylum in Cork, Ireland. Myself and a few friends have established (go on, laugh..!) an investigatory paranormal group here in Cork. We feel that that side of things is grossly under-represented in the county at present, so we're hoping to change that now! ;-) Our objective is to travel to various sites and buildings in the Cork area - before expanding our activities to other areas - and to attempt to gather evidence of paranormal activity. There have been countless stories of hauntings and such bandied about regarding certain places here for many, many years. We want to substantiate these stories, if possible. We aim to have undertaken 10 investiations before 2008 ends. Good auld St Kevin's is on our shortlist already! We have heard that St Kev's has a horrible atmosphere and that it has creeped the bejaysus out of people even in the daytime. The river below it (the River Lee) has 'played host' to numerous patient drownings throughout the asylum's operation from the 1840s to 2002. A woman I know, who lives near the hospital, was telling me about renovations on part of the building further down on the site- St Anne's, I think. Some of that is being renovated and converted into apartments. She said that builders and other manual labourers working on the building had legged it out of the place, following a number of strange incidents. They saw shadows in the shape of people, heard voices that couldn't be accounted for, ditto with footsteps, saw debris moving of its own accord and just generally felt an awfully unpleasant atmosphere up there. And that was during the bloody daytime. Anyway, we're going to brave the place at nighttime- see what we come across ourselves. We are aiming to construct a website as well in order to store accounts of our activites and (possible) findings- not to mention for it to promote what we're all about. So, everything is a work in progress really. But, hey, it's a labour of love.. :-D Congratulations on your excellent site again- I could probably spend hours looking through everything! It's really cool. You have a great eye for taking photographs and your captions for each one are very apt as well. Evident fab understanding of lighting, proportion, angles and just what simply makes a brilliant photograph. I'm no expert on photography, but I know quality when I see it. Good luck and God speed to you! :-D Sheila

the cemetary once had 2 chapels in its centre, one side was catholic and one was c of e, these were demolished in the early 1980s and the stones used to build path edges and suchlike. there are reputed to be many thousands buried in this small graveyard. when the big flu pandemics of the early 20th century struck, there would be sometimes ozens and dozens of deaths a month, many were buried in mass graves. there are also these few sad military graves representing staff who left whittingham to fight in the last centuries 2 great wars, and who paid the ultimate price. its poignant that on the return of their bodys to england, their familys regarded the hospital as such a big part of their lives and such an eternal thing, thay they chose to inter them here rather than in the cemetarys in the towns or villages surrounding the hospital. how were they to know that whittingham wasnt going to be there forever

the building onthe left side with the 2 green vents on the roof is whittinghams crowning glory, its beautiful ballroom. the corridor leading away from the foreground, is ward S corridor, where the hospital hairdressers was, the building on the side of the ballroom, partly obscured by trees is the catholic chapel, and the 3 storey building centre shot is ward 3, the small building on the right side of the pic, made of the lighter coloured bricks, was the tv lounge for the langdale unit which was whittinghams secure unit. as i had worked for over 10 years on the maintainance of the hospital, i have walked all these roofs many many times, and it saddens me to see the state of the old place now. not least because i spent so many hours fitting the bloody lead valleys and land gutters that the toerags have ripped out!! this is the lawns complex, the centre building was the main block, the ground floor had the cafe, the first floor had the library and toilets, and upstairs was closed off and accessible only by a small twisty staircase pictured elsewhere in thei set, when i was there, the old patients files were stored up there. the courtyard to the right of centre was once the private courtyard garden of the hospital superintendant. i remember picking rhubarb in there when i worked there, as it had gone to seed and was growing wild all over the place! the small building in the botom left was an office staffed by the patients activitys department who would organise activities within the lawns for the patients, from bingo to film shows, even the christmas parties and haloween parties John Regan

I have been abandoned by my mother in this place and then went to France where I lived in a family who made me forget the truth about my birth. Years later I discovered the truth, and it is the very first time I see pictures of these buildings that I have been looking for from such a long time ! Is everything destroyed today or can we still see something before it is completely destroyed ? Does someone know if some registers still exist somewhere, with names of people who used to stay there ? It might be the possibility for me to find my father's name or some other personal informations ! Thanks for your help and advices, thanks for these pictures. Alan (aod.cork@gmail.com)

I have recently read the book called Don't Ever Tell by Kathy O'Beirne and I was deeply shocked by what happened. I cried when I started to read it because of the way her father treated her and then to be treated so badly by society as well as all the other poor children and women. I find it hard to believe that all of this was going on only up to the last few years. The book itself is like reading something out of the dark ages. Most of these women were all around my age and just to think that all of these things were happening while I was growing up. I do hope that Kathys campaign for justice for Magdalen girls in Ireland is going well. Good Luck and God Bless x

These photos bring back memories. I used to help maintain the telephone systems at BRI. It's fairly sad to know that all this will be reduced to rubble in the future.

Hullo, I'm interested in Urban Exploring but I'm a UE virgin I'm afraid and I'm looking for an easy site to start off with. I live very close to Long Ashton and was wondering what kind of site Barrow Gurney is. Any info would be appreciated. Nice pictures.

Your photo are wonderful....it saddens me that these one beautiful pieces of architecture end up in such a way.......people once lived, worked and loved in these places and now they are forgotten. I found the pictures of Blackburn Royal Infirmary particularly evocative because as a child I spent time there and as an adult I worked there in the radiology dept whereas now I am working at the new hospital which seems very clinical in comparison (maybe a hospital should feel this way but the infirmary always felt like an old friend to me!!) I am so glad that the old part of the building is not being demolished and will hopefully be restored to its former glory. Thank you once again for these pictures. Sam

some of the most nostalgic photos i have ever seen as I feel Iam part of the history of the place.it's where I learned to swim. We went every week from primary school Moston Fields piled onto a red bus. There was always a rush to get back to school and yes the cubicles were small and your underwear and socks were always difficult to put on. Loads of talcum powder helped. If there was no room in the cubicles you were directed upstairs to change in the bathrooms. We had swimming galas from school . I always remember the canvas curtains and the green line tiles on the floor of the pool. In the summer hols the baths was a good trip out and I could walk there from Church lane and one of the cake shops would sell penny bits in a bag. My mum used the laundry every Saturday as we did not have as washing machine . the car was loaded up and everything came back ironed. We also had lessons in a third pool that had stone steps into it. I think we called this the victorian pool. The entrance into the baths was all oak panels and tiled in the usual victorian way but as a child I never noticed them so thanks for taking the detailed pictures of the remains of the beautiful interior. Thankyou for taking the photos they are absolutely brilliant
